The Compass Center

The Compass Center values its services to and support of our community’s survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, and/or those close to them.

We believe it is also our responsibility to educate the broader community to help prevent domestic violence and sexual assault among all populations. We are responsible to our clients, our donors and other key stakeholders who play an important part in stopping the destructive cycle of violence.

The Compass Center’s professional and dedicated staff shall:

  • Provide compassion, support, counseling and advocacy to primary and secondary victims of domestic violence and sexual assault to assist in healing and recovery.
  • Seek to educate and create a process of change for perpetrators of domestic violence through use of the Duluth Model
  • Increase understanding and awareness of domestic violence, sexual assault, and related issues through educational outreach efforts.

The work of all Compass Center staff and volunteers shall be performed without regard to race, sex, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability or ability to pay.

  • Say what you feel, lovingly.

if you are a perpetrator...

Abuse is:

  • Calling bad names or putting someone down
  • Shouting and cursing
  • Hitting, slapping and/or pushing
  • Making threats of any kind
  • Jealousy and suspicion
  • Keeping someone away from family and friends
  • Throwing things around the house

Domestic violence is a crime. It destroys relationships and families.

if you are a caring friend...

  • Don’t be afraid to share your concern for your friend’s safety.
  • Acknowledge that your friend is in a difficult and perhaps scary situation.
  • Be supportive.
  • Be non-judgmental.
  • Encourage your friend to reach out for professional support and guidance.
  • Remember that you cannot “rescue” your friend.
